Every middle school boy would kill to have an older, kind, blonde bombshell doting on them day and night. Most likely, this was a wish fulfillment of the author, as that’s exactly what the anime turns out to be. Shiina Aki has left his home in the country to come to Tokyo and become manlier after constantly being mistaken for a young girl. However, upon his first meeting with the caretaker Sunohara Ayaka, she too mistakes him for a girl and drags “her” along into a bath with her.
It doesn’t take long for the mistake to be discovered, and now Ayaka and the other female residents of the dorm are looking after a younger middle school boy. Aside from Ayaka, the other girls are at the height of puberty and enjoying a rare bit of male attention, turning him into quite the local celebrity. Unfortunately, it usually ends up with them trying to dress him up or remarking how cute he is, countering his intent of moving in the first place. The show is a mix of cute, funny, and abundantly sexy as the young boy is guided through life by the most voluptuous woman he’ll probably ever meet. The group is constantly toeing the line, but it hasn’t been crossed...yet.
Shiina Aki, despite his best intentions, is adorably cute. His misunderstandings are comical, and his attempts at impressing the caretaker Ayaka while professing the opposite are always entertaining. Ayaka herself is a warm and kind person, not to mention well proportioned beyond belief. The two form the classic onee-san/shota dynamic that seems to be prevalent in the seedy underbelly of Japanese doujinshi, but this time it’s in your typical slice of life anime. It works and is entertaining to watch.
Why You Should Watch Sunohara-sou no Kanrinin-san
Sunohara-sou no Kanrinin-san isn’t anything too original, but it does have the classic character types down pat. You have the short tsundere senpai and her tall, overly affectionate, admiring cohort. There’s the yandere who loves dressing cute things cutely, a gyaru and her friends, and of course, everyone’s favorite onee-san, the caretaker herself. The voice acting is really nice in this, in particular, Shiina and Ayaka. Their interactions really go from cute and wholesome to “wait a minute this should probably be stopped…”
You should already have an idea what type of show this is. If you hate effeminate male main characters that could just as easily be girls, especially since they’re voiced by women, you’ll probably dislike this one. While there’s a highly flirtatious atmosphere and some drunk half-confessions, the romance doesn’t really go anywhere either. We’re grateful for that because, while it’s never specifically stated, there’s at least a 5-year age gap between the main stars; a young boy and an adult woman. It’s in a gray territory no matter what country you’re watching in!
